Best Dress and Shoes for Wedding Photographers

I get asked often what should I wear as a wedding photographer while I’m photographing a wedding? I know that when I was first starting out, it took me a long time to find the perfect “work uniform” that I could wear and be comfortable in for 8-12 hours at a time. I can’t even begin to tell you the horror stories!

So, as we begin to get ready for wedding season, I wanted to share my favorite “little black dress” (with pockets!!), super comfy shoes, and accessories that I wear for all of my events. Below is my updated “go-to” items that I buy in multiples and wear out each season.

Now is the perfect time to stock up & I hope these are helpful for your next wedding!

Best Dress and Shoes for Wedding Photographers

No. 1 - Amelie Dress by Boden - This Amelie dress is the updated version of my beloved Phoebe dress which has sadly been discontinued. The Amelie is a very universally flattering A-Line shape and made from breathable fabric which is great for when you start to break a sweat. The best feature about this dress? It has POCKETS which is a “must-have” for me!

No. 2 - Gabor Gabor Black Flats - I LOVE these shoes! They are like sneakers with a rubber and flexible sole but they look like nice flats from above. These are 100% my secret shoe weapon on a wedding day!! They didn’t need any “breaking in” so no band-aids required. I’ve had mine for about 5 years and they are still going strong! They also come in a cute Ballerina Flat or Buckle Toe options.

No. 3 - TOMS Jutti Flats - Black Suede - Perforated Detail - I change into these flats as soon as the ceremony is over and cocktail hour begins. I love these TOMS because they are so comfy and give my feet a bit of break by switching up my arch support. I purchase at least 2 pairs every season and wear them out by the end of the year.

No. 4 - Rothy’s Pointed Black Flat - (save $20 when you order your first pair of Rothy’s through this LINK) - I like these Rothy’s for a few reasons but mainly because they are very stylish and comfortable at the same time. They are machine washable so they are going to last a long time. I will wear these for either part of my day but I would suggest getting arch supports if you require more support insole support.

No. 5 - Black Compression 5” Bike Shorts - One time I wore Spanx to a wedding and by the ceremony, I was ripping them off before the ceremony even started because I couldn't breath! So, I found a pair of compression bike shorts (similar to linked) and they are my go-to “shorts” i wear under every dress when I’m working. They are comfortable, give me a bit of shape, and do not tug or pull throughout the day.

3 Tips for Creating a Wedding Photography Timeline

I will admit that I am completely Type-A about wedding photography timelines and wedding day shot lists because I want to know how the day is going to run before I arrive. I work closely with my clients along with their wedding planners, to create a wedding photography timeline that will serve them best!⠀

I want to make sure I’m capturing all of the moments as they happen as well as be prepared for any special surprises that come up along the way. Over the last 10 years as a wedding photographer, I’ve learned a few things about creating an incredible wedding photography timeline that everyone loves and I wanted to share my top 3 tips with you.

3 Tips for Creating a Wedding Photography Timeline

No. 1 - ASK Your Clients - What photos are important to them especially for family photos? Do you know if they have any sensitive family issues you should be aware of? My best piece of advice is to ask them well before their wedding day. I prefer to get this information 60 days prior to their wedding day to create a timeline to accommodate their requests. I send a detailed questionnaire that the couple or planner can fill out which gives me all of the information I need to put their photography timeline together.
⠀
No. 2 - ADD Time for Travel - Don't forget to add time into your day to travel to each location. Whether it's between getting ready locations, the ceremony venue to the reception venue, if it isn't all at one location, be sure to add in EXTRA travel time.

bonus tip: I always use Google Maps to give me the estimated travel time and then I tack on 10-15 minutes more as a buffer. It's better to be early than late!⠀
⠀
No. 3 - COORDINATE with the Planner - If you or your client is working with a wedding planner, be sure to coordinate timelines so that everyone is on the same page. This is VITAL to serving your client at the highest level. You don't want to show up with one timeline, only to be given another timeline that takes away from all the incredible photography moments you had planned to capture such as bridal portraits and timely sunset photos during golden hour. Communication is key here to have a spectacular day for you and your couples. ⠀
⠀
Last, don’t forget to be the GUIDE for your clients and communicate with everyone involved to ensure you have an incredible day!

Need a little more help? Do you want to know all of the must-have photos that I capture on a wedding day?
⠀
I created The Complete Photographers Guide - Real Wedding Day Checklist especially for wedding photographers to help you get a headstart at capturing all the must-have shots for your clients, yourself, and editors!

5 Tips for Submitting Your Photos to Wedding Blogs

One of the best ways to get your name out to start attracting your ideal clients is to get your wedding photography featured online and in print publications. Even with the new landscape of publications, couples are still searching for inspiration when planning their wedding day.

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is "How do I submit my photography to a wedding blog or magazine?”. I have been fortunate that my own wedding photography has been featured in over 50+ features with a mix of online and print and I even taught a full day about this during my Marketing Intensive Workshop.

There are a lot of factors that can make or break a wedding submission but I wanted to share my top 5 tips for submitting your photos to wedding blogs.

5 Tips for Submitting Your Photos to Wedding Blogs

No. 1
- A Color Story - Ask your client or wedding planner in advance what the color and theme of the wedding is going to be. You can then put in the work beforehand to make sure your backgrounds for the couple's details will work with the complete color story of the day. Editors LOVE this because they can tell a succinct story from start to finish.⠀
⠀
No. 2 - Pre-Style the Invitations - By taking the time to ask for the full invitation suite before the actual wedding day will give you plenty of time to figure out the styling of the paper suite. You guys, PAPER TAKES TIME, and rushing on a wedding day is not the time to figure it out or just "wing it". By doing the homework beforehand, you can take the time to style the couple's wedding invitations, take a photo with your phone of the winning layouts, and then QUICKLY recreate it the day of the wedding for photos. You can always adjust the styling based on what styling elements you end up using, but remember, less is more. Don't overcrowd the paper with stuff that doesn't make sense or isn't even the couple.⠀

No. 3 - Ask for Flowers in Advance - Ask the florist if it's possible to get a few extra blooms or greenery for your detail styling photos but don't overcrowd the subject (ie. the paper) with tons of flowers. A few well-placed blooms can add to the beauty of invitations. Also, sometimes you might have to pay for extra flowers because flowers cost money, so to me, it's worth the investment in creating a stunning photo for my clients.
⠀
No. 4- Tell A Story from Start to Finish - When you are selecting your photos to submit, here is a good rule of thumb - 25% of the couple, 75% of the details including flat lays, table settings, venues, and environmental shots. They want to see it from start to finish to tell their audience a complete story. And don't forget DANCING & RECEPTION photos too!

Bonus Tip: Cake cutting is a *must* include a photo for me (if your couple has a cake to cut!). ⠀

No. 5 - Find Your Match - Make sure to do your homework and research the wedding publications before you submit your photos for consideration. You want to make sure that your style of photography matches the style of photos that particular publication showcases. If you are a “light & airy” photographer, I would steer clear of submitting your work to a “dark & moody” outlet because it’s just not going to be a match.

I hope these tips were helpful and help you create your next wedding submission but if you’re feeling a little stuck and need a bit more help, I’ve created An Insiders Guide to Wedding Submissions to share with you what I've learned over the last 10 years as a wedding photographer.

My wedding photography has been published in over 50+ publications including Martha Stewart Weddings, Style Me Pretty, BRIDES, The Knot, and many, many more!

Inside this 7-page guide, I’m sharing my wedding submission checklist, my file prep cheat sheet, and the dos and donts of submission etiquette. Once you are doing reading this guide, it’s going to save you hours of putting your next submission together because you'll have an insider guide to how to create your next wedding submission!

New Year, New Focus for Tea with Jainé

It's hard to believe that Tea with Jainé is almost three years old. I created Tea with Jainé because I wanted a way to give back to the photography community and help educate wedding photographers with real advice and tangible tips.

What started out as an Instagram series later morphed into more than I could have ever imagined but recently, I've been struggling to find my focus. I was doing a lot but it felt like I wasn't doing enough.

So, over the holidays, I read Chillpreneur which immediately resonated with me, and by the time I was done with the book, I had a very clear vision for my next steps. Don't you just love that?

Tea with Jaine - A Podcast for Wedding Photographers

Here's what's in store for Tea with Jainé:

  • The Tea with Jainé Podcast will become our main focus point of education. I will continue to bring you thoughtful insight, real advice, and tangible tips about what it's really like to be a wedding photographer. I'll interview other business and industry leaders so that we can help you create and grow a profitable business.

  • Our blog will continue to be a resource for wedding photographers. Read recent posts, listen to our latest podcast, learn about new offers and partner collaborations.

  • More education emails will be arriving into your inbox bi-monthly.

  • Our Tea with Jainé education online shop will continue to expand with more easy to use templates, guides, and courses.

  • Our New 1:1 or Done for You Wedding Submission Curations will be the only additional service offered.

  • No Change: I will continue to teach at conferences and workshops.

  • No Change: Our 1:1 Coaching Services are available - 4 spots per month

So, what's being discontinued?

  • Due my own lack of consistency and unable to find time to record new segments, there will be no more Tea with Jainé IGTV videos but don't worry, I plan on having many impromptu and scheduled Instagram LIVES throughout the year where we'll be able to chat in real time!

  • Missed a show? IGTV archive will always be available if you missed or want to rewatch a previous episode.

  • Springboard sessions will no longer be offered.

  • No more In Person Meetups or Google Meet video chats. I loved seeing & meeting you in-person and online but with the stress of the pandemic, I'm no longer able to host these type of events.

Phew, that was a lot!

I'm so beyond grateful to have you in our Tea with Jainé community and I cannot wait to continue to inspire, educate, and help you build a profitable and successful wedding photography business that supports your dreams!
